What to do Llano and Mason Texas?

Llano and Mason are two cities belonging to the famed Texas Hill country. They have the singular tourist attractions to captivate intrepid adventurers, a family in a RV, rock hounds or the laid-back tourists.

What else do they share in common?

The pristine running Llano River which runs between Llano and Mason, an extraordinary past, distinct rich archeological sites, well preserved historical landmarks, and stunning natural vistas where residents and tourists engage in water sports such as fly fishing, kayaking, canoeing or swimming.

Llano and Mason cities have perpetually blue skies, cool breezes and a mild year around climate. For couples intent on creating romantic memories or a family on their annual vacation; the change of seasons isn't a hindrance.  The winters' temperatures hardly reach below zero degree.  As for summer frolic, the hotter months are from July to August where temperatures stay near 100° F (37-40C).

Both Llano and Mason possess the appealing rustic and bucolic ambience found in small towns and all the amenities nearby neighboring cities; Austin and San Antonio have.  But none of the hectic and harried atmosphere a metropolis has, which is so tiring to the soul.

“How y'all doing today?” is the greeting friendly locals will say to you. You're in the heart of Texas after all.

Founded in the 1850s', Mason is named after Fort Mason, from which it grew and prospered.  Take a stroll down this historical town, notice any cut-sandstone blocks used by homes and businesses? These were taken from the old fort. However, you can view the rebuilt Fort Mason, which has the four-room officers' quarters on crest of Post Hill. It's been reconstructed with the original stone blocks.

Rock hounds will get a kick out of hunting for Topaz, which is Texas's state gem, in Mason's creeks.

Then visit the Eckert James River Bat Cave and watch with awe as millions of bats fly out at sunset, in a flight pattern resembling a tornado. This cave is under the care of Nature's Conservancy, a conservation agency.

Then end the day with a well deserved country style meal in any of Mason's leading restaurants.

Llano city, on the other hand, was created in 1855 and became the county seat in 1856. Some historians say "Llano" is a translation of a Spanish word, which means plain. Others say that the original name "Rio do los Chanas" given by its Spanish explorers to describe the river of the Chanas or Tonkawa Indians.  Because both words sound alike, centuries down, it led to the change of the city's name into Llano.

Go deer hunting!  Do you know that Llano is the "The Deer Capital of Texas"?  Annually, from November to December, eager hunters come for the thrill of the hunt. The county is reputed to have the highest population of white-tailed deer.

If rock hunting is your passion, then you'll enjoy digging for Llanite.  This rock brown colored granite, is specked with sky blue crystals and rusty-pink feldspar.  And it's found nowhere else in the world but Llano. Or you can go digging for rare pearls, around Lake Buchanan.

For a quiet day exploring, you can embark on a historical walking tour of entire downtown area Llano, as it's a designated National Historic District.  Wrap up your day by visiting the Llano County Museum, which houses a broad collection of early Texas and the Hill Country Wildlife Museum, which contains the collection of Charles K. Campbell, a prolific collector of game animals.

Finally, celebrate the end of your vacation with a scrumptious country meal at the Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que. Its home to the original “Big Chop”!
